Breaking Barriers: Hmong Parents and Sports

Hmong American parents often express their reservations about their children participating in sports like basketball in Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). They hold the belief that such activities can be perceived as a waste of time and money. They prefer that their children focus solely on school. Moreover, they view AAU games as excessively physical and potentially dangerous, further reinforcing their reluctance. Consequently, many Hmong American athletes find themselves refraining from participating in sports altogether, or restricting their involvement to school-based activities. Unfortunately, this limited exposure can result in missed opportunities for these young athletes. It also prevent them to hone their skills and gain exposure to college and professional scouts.

Creating Opportunities

However, a shift is gradually taking place within the Hmong American community as a new generation of parents emerges. These forward-thinking individuals are encouraging their children to engage in AAU and club sports. They recognize the potential benefits of such involvement, including the development of valuable skills, discipline, and teamwork. Additionally, they understand the importance of creating opportunities for their children to earn scholarships and potentially pursue sports at the collegiate or professional level. As the Hmong American community continues to grow and evolve, it is likely that more and more parents will come to appreciate the value of their children’s participation in sports.

It is crucial for parents to adopt an open-minded approach and encourage their children to explore various interests, such as playing sports. Engaging in physical activities not only promotes an active lifestyle but also cultivates focus and enhances social interactions. For some children, participating in sports can pave the way for a successful future, opening doors to scholarships, and even professional careers. As Hmong parents, it is essential to allow our children the freedom to explore different options, even if they deviate from traditional expectations.

Conclusion

By removing barriers and embracing new experiences, parents can provide their children with valuable opportunities and expose them to a broader range of possibilities. It is through these experiences that children can truly flourish and surprise us with their talents and potential.
