In the competitive world of junior golf, few players shine as brightly as Yinyoe Yang. A standout golfer and a rising star, Yinyoe has not only excelled on the course but has also demonstrated the kind of perseverance, dedication, and mental strength that make champions. Yinyoe’s journey in golf is one of passion, hard work, and the support of her family, which has helped her grow into one of the top junior golfers today. In this exclusive interview with Hmong Sports and Competitions (Hmong SNC), Yinyoe shares her experiences, challenges, and hopes for the future.

A Love for Golf Sparked by Family
Yinyoe’s introduction to golf came at a young age, thanks to her father. “My dad was the first person who got me into golf,” she recalls. What started as casual rounds soon turned into something much more. “I kept playing golf every single day and eventually wanted to compete in tournaments,” she says. For Yinyoe, golf became a passion, not just a hobby. “When I was young, I thought tournaments were fun, and I just wanted to keep playing in them.” This love for competition has remained constant, fueling her drive to push her game to new levels.
Mastering the Short Game, Striving for Consistency
Like any dedicated athlete, Yinyoe knows her strengths and the areas where she needs to improve. “My greatest strength on the golf course is definitely my short game,” she shares. Whether it’s saving pars or pulling off tricky putts, Yinyoe feels confident when she’s close to the green. “Even if my long game is lacking, I can always count on my short game.”
However, Yinyoe is always striving for more. “The part of my game that I tend to always need improvement in is my irons,” she admits. Iron play, known for its precision and consistency demands, has been a focus for her in practice. “They’re a bit inconsistent, and it’s something I’ve been trying to work on.”
Staying Mentally Focused Under Pressure
Golf is as much a mental game as it is physical, and Yinyoe understands the importance of keeping her composure on the course. When it comes to preparing for a tournament, she doesn’t follow a specific mental routine but instead relies on a confident mindset. “I just go in feeling confident,” she says. Once on the course, her strategy is simple yet effective: “I take it one shot at a time and forget about any previous shots to keep me focused on what’s ahead.”
This mental toughness has helped Yinyoe navigate the highs and lows of competition, allowing her to stay calm and composed even when the stakes are high.
Balancing Golf and Academics
As a high school student, Yinyoe faces the challenge of balancing her academics with her demanding golf schedule. However, she’s found a system that works. “Since I do online school at Arkansas Connections Academy, I’m able to get schoolwork done whenever and wherever,” she explains. For Yinyoe, staying ahead of her coursework is critical, especially during the tournament season. “I always make sure to get ahead and do extra work whenever I have free time. I don’t want to fail or get bad grades, so that’s my main motivation to get my work done early.”
Lessons Learned from Memorable Tournaments
One of Yinyoe’s most memorable experiences came during the AJGA Taylor Gooch Foundation Junior Championship. After a challenging first round, Yinyoe found herself in 20th place out of 26 competitors. “It was honestly a bit discouraging to know that I played a decent round and was still near the bottom of the leaderboard,” she recalls. However, she didn’t let that initial setback define her tournament. “I was able to come back after shooting a 71 (-1) in both the second and third rounds, which brought me all the way up to 7th place.” For Yinyoe, this experience was a powerful lesson in resilience. “It taught me that during a tournament, there is a lot of golf to be played and that anything can happen.”
Inspired by Tiger Woods
Like many young golfers, Yinyoe has drawn inspiration from the legendary Tiger Woods. “Ever since I was young, I’ve always heard about him winning big,” she says. “His confidence and desire to win makes me want to win.” In terms of skill and mindset, wood’s influence on the game is something Yinyoe has carried with her throughout her journey.
Looking Ahead: Goals for the Future
Yinyoe has big plans for the future, both in the short and long term. She hopes to improve her long game, an area where she sees room for growth. “I want to get it to become more consistent and hit it farther,” she says. In the long term, Yinyoe’s sights are set on competing at the collegiate level. “I definitely want to earn a scholarship at a good, competitive school,” she shares.
Overcoming Setbacks and Staying Motivated
Every athlete experiences setbacks, and Yinyoe is no exception. “Since golf is such a mental battle, I try my best to forget about bad rounds, but also try to remember that it’s okay to have a bad day because that’s just how golf works,” she explains. Yinyoe’s biggest motivation comes from her parents, who have supported her every step of the way. “I know they’ve sacrificed their lives, time, and money just for me to play golf,” she says. “I want to be able to repay them by playing good golf and winning because I know it brings them joy to see me play well.”
The Value of Being Part of a Team
Although golf is often an individual sport, Yinyoe has also benefited from being part of a team. “Being part of a team definitely adds a little bit of pressure, which is something golfers—and really all athletes—have to get used to,” she says. The pressure of knowing that her performance affects the entire team has also helped her grow as an individual competitor. “Playing under pressure this way helps me when I’m playing individually since I’ll already be used to it.”
Advice for Aspiring Golfers
When asked what advice she would give young golfers, Yinyoe offers some valuable words: “Have fun and relax. Don’t go setting high or unrealistic standards for yourself, because that’ll only frustrate you in the end.” While it may be easier said than done, Yinyoe believes embracing this mindset is key to long-term success. “The faster you come to terms with this, the faster you’ll improve,” she adds.
A Bright Future Ahead
Yinyoe Yang is not only a talented golfer but also a humble and driven young athlete with a bright future ahead. Her journey is a testament to the power of dedication, family support, and a love for the game. As she continues pursuing her goals, Yinyoe will undoubtedly inspire others in the Hmong community and beyond to chase their dreams on and off the golf course.
